Treasury Feature 11/11/13

Hi All!

I hope that whatever you did this weekend, it was a memorable one.
I had a nice relaxing weekend at home with my boyfriend. We watched loads of episodes of Breaking Bad (love it!) and my sister stayed over on Friday night and brought her freshly baked banana and walnut loaf with her. Mmmmm!

I spent at least 4 hours on Sunday morning working on product photography but in the end I wasn’t happy with any of the images as they all had a blue tint to them (probably something to do with the camera settings), alas I will have to do them all again – what fun! (not).

I am in 4 Treasurys this week! The first one is entitled “I’m not always a pink kind of girl” – which I can vouch for as I’m not a particularly pinky girl either, however I do like blood red, ox red, burgundy (all very similar I know, hehe) and blush pink and they all feature in this lovely treasury. My blush pink candle “Anniversary” is featured here.

Photography Pt II

Last weekend as promised I made a start on my new product photography. I recently registered as a seller with not on the highstreet, which I’m really excited about, but before I opened my shop I wanted to make a strong first impression with a collection of original, striking, creative imagery of my products. As is advised with product photography they are generally more effective when taken in natural light so to some degree I’ve been at the mercy of the elements, as you know as well as I do that UK weather is nothing if not unpredictable and mostly when your hoping for the sun to shine, it rains instead! Thankfully, on this occasion it didn’t rain but it was very overcast and I didn’t want to spend hours on taking photo’s to be left with pictures that were dark and shadowy so unfortunately I only managed to take a couple.

I have tried to utilise the space and light in the best way that I could, with slight variations in the presentation of the products, but still keeping with the general theme. I found that the photo’s taken in the contrast of the wood and lifestyle shots on the mantle piece were generally the most effective so I tried to take a variety of those. I’m going to try again this weekend, and to maximise my chances of good lighting conditions I might take some photo’s in the back garden with an erected backdrop.

Here is some of my photography. All comments, critiques and suggestions are welcome!

I am a big fan of photography, in particular of fine art photography, landscape photography, black and white and animal photography but unfortunately a photographer I am not. It’s not that I don’t have the creative flair, I do have idea’s it’s just the execution that is not so great – my lack of patience lets me down methinks, lol. Alas, I have created a wonderful treasury on Etsy entitled Blac/K & Whit/E which is an amazing array of stunning black and white photography created by talented and extremely PATIENT artists πŸ˜‰

Here is a little preview:

I photograph all of my handmade products myself and sell predominantly online so my product photography is one of the most important if not the most important facet to my business exposure. Being approached by retailers, bloggers, and customers is dependant on how strong my branding and photography is and it has to convey the sense of luxury and exclusivity that my brand is about. I think it’s very important that there is a level of consistency in the style and approach of photography when you’re building a brand but then I do feel that variety is also important and so tomorrow I will be taking some new photographs of all of my products and also my newest recruits: My Body Souffle’ and Body Salt Scrub Souffle’ to reflect a stronger, more creative, and more polished version of The Secret Scent Societe’. I have done a little research and have some idea’s about different ways to present them so I’ll be trying them out aswell as getting some closer shots in better lighting.

What do you think of my photography?

And do you have any idea’s about what I could do to improve on it? – Answers on a postcard, or even just on here! πŸ™‚

Pomp & Circumstance the show stealer!

Pomp & Circumstance the show stealer!

Hi!

I hope you had a great Bank Holiday weekend. The weather certainly could have been better!
I’m desperate for some sun and am counting down the days until I go to Las Vegas. Just under a week to go now!

Last week I had my showcase at Publicis in Central London. They invited me down to use there space to sell and promote my products to there staff. I was only there over the lunchtime period so considering I was only there for a mere 2 hours it went very well! I had alot of very good feedback, the men in particular seemed impressed with my products – it’s usually very hard to impress men with fragrant products but they asked alot of questions and complimented my packaging so I was quite flattered. Pomp & Circumstance, my Limited Edition Bulgarian Rose & Jasmine Soy Candle stole the show. It has such a depth and character to it, and it is almost impossible to pick out the individual notes as it has such complexity. Pomp & Circumstance is a very luxurious fragrance. It’s a shame I can’t upgrade this candle to part of my standard range, but my supplier of Bulgarian Rose doesn’t always have it so it has to remain Limited Edition for now. Nonetheless, Cloud Nine remained a firm favourite, I love playing the game with my clients of “guess the fragrance”, and there was one guy in particular who was brilliant at it! He could recognise some of the components, which is quite hard to do as I usually have quite a few notes and accords in my fragrances. Creme’ De La Creme’, Ambrosial Peach and Indian Mistress of the Night still seem to be a winner with both sexes. I was told that The Caspian Sea was very true to the brief: A subtle, fresh, light, aquatic scent. Lavender, With Love, I knew would be a favourite as it’s a white candle and women love Lavender!
Anniversary, the candle and the reed diffuser was hands down the most sought after fragrance of all. I anticipated that it might be so that was handy.

Publicis do regular marketing events like this at there offices for small creative businesses like mine, so hopefully I’ll get invited back in the future. I am planning to introduce a few new products to my range like body cream’s and souffle’s, salt and sugar scrubs, perfumes, bath oils and I may have an attempt at making Cold Process Soap. It’s a little more technical then M&P soap which I already make, and it takes longer to cure. I’m not so certain I have the patience to wait but we’ll see! πŸ™‚
