We’ve come to a bit of a lull here in The Secret Scent Societe’ lab but rather then sit about stewing over the whats the whys and the wheres I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and try getting my products into some magazines. I don’t know what stopped me from doing this before, fear perhaps, but I’ve decided that fear isn’t going to get my brand where I want it to be. I realise now that without setting any realistic tasks and goals I would continue to feel de-motivated and ask myself what the point was. Understanding that this is normal, and that I’m far from being the only one is the first step to deciding how to remedy the problem. So I took some advice that my cousin gave me last week about contacting the magazines and websites that I want my products to be featured in and have contacted the editor of my favourite magazine of all Stylist. There page The Style List always has an eyecatching variety of products both from well known brands and small independent ones. It’s infact the one place where I know that my products would do well to be seen in, as in actually result in sales, which unfortunately not what happened after my ad in VOGUE (sad but true). In reality all marketing and promotion is a gamble, and sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. But I do believe that being seen in Stylist is a positive and progressive step towards being where I want to be: An established brand that people can’t help but to be loyal to. I appreciate that they must get tons of people contacting them about being in there magazine so I have sent an email offering a free sample of my products. I mean, who doesn’t want a freebie?
I think that since I’m on a roll there’s no point in stopping there.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to contact a few other publications about being featured. Aferall they can only say no huh?

Has fear ever held you back from doing things you want to do? And if so, what did you do about it in the end?

We’re about to strike a pose…in VOGUE!

We’re about to strike a pose…in VOGUE!

Yes, Yes it’s almost upon us! The most exciting moment in my short but very fulfilling business life:

We are about to be featured in British VOGUE!

Our handmade Rose-Geranium & Jasmine Body Souffle’ will be in the May issue in an article named “Beauty’s Best Kept Secrets” alongside other fabulous beauty brands.
I don’t dare to dream of what this might mean for my brand, as it’s quite overwhelming to consider the possibilities but I am hopeful that this will be a stepping stone for me into exploring other avenues for The Secret Scent Societe’.

And of course this exposure can only help my cause. I’ve decided to cut down on the markets that I’ve been doing as they were never very lucrative for me. Successful market stalling requires a combination of being in the right locations for my target market, patience and a healthy dose of good luck. In addition, doing market stalls is very time consuming and energy zapping, and unless you have a market stall companion to talk to it can be very boring too! No, selling online is the way forward!

I’m very much looking forward to adopting the phrase: “As seen in VOGUE” – I realise it’s a little braggy, but that name holds weight. And I need weight to approach the kinds of people that I want to approach.

So please show your support by picking up your copy of the May edition of VOGUE, which is out on Monday 7th April, or better yet try out our Body Souffle’ for yourself – I promise that you, your Best Friend, your Mother, Your lover (well perhaps not your lover;) will love it! 🙂

Photography Pt 111

Photography Pt 111

Photography, as I’m sure you know by now, isn’t my strong point. I have seen so many handmade products with amazing photography and it makes me feel very frustrated indeed that I can’t seem to manage to take simple, professional shots of my products.

It isn’t simply a matter of buying the best camera, and it just about having the “eye” for taking pictures. It’s a combination of both. And good lighting. Always, always good lighting!

Alas even when I bought myself a professional light tent, with special daylight lamps to use to illuminate the shadows my pictures still didn’t come out the way I wanted them too. Sure they were an improvement on the previous, but they still weren’t clean enough, they weren’t white enough, and they were still very shadowy in places. To make even matters worse, it seemed as though I was at the mercy of the sun – everytime it moved I had to move. Reading forums about taking photo’s of your products, the advice of the majority was to use as much natural light as possible. But for me it just wasn’t possible. The natural light was too changeable, it wasn’t consistent enough and thus I was finding the quality of my photo’s diminishing as the day wore on. Frustrating.

So on Sunday my boyfriend and I spent the entire day working on finding the perfect camera set-up, the perfect setting on the camera, and the best position in the house to take the most simple and effective shots. Thankfully we found it. The decision after taking lots of pictures using different settings then comparing them all on the computer told us a few things: That we needed to turn the light tent the other way round (so that it had it’s back to the sun), this gave a less intense light but a more fluid light. And most importantly: It was no longer shadowy!

Also, we decided against using natural light. When we viewed them on the computer they seemed more grainy, less perfect, and unlike jewellery, or clothing, where it’s always better to see the texture of the materials used, imperfections in glass, isn’t so great. Using flash eliminated those imperfections, and made the product really come to life. Nevertheless it was a very subtle difference between the two, and that’s what I was looking for.

Over the next few weeks, before my article in VOGUE goes live (can’t wait!), I need to redo all of my photography so that it is in keeping with this new updated style. Up until now good photography has alluded me but not anymore!

I would love to hear your thoughts on my photography! And if you know any trade secrets that could help me make them better I would be very happy to hear them, and of course, if you make your own products then I’d love to have a look at yours too!

Fun Times!

Fun Times!

I never thought a craft market could be so fun!

Yesterday, The Secret Scent Societe’ exhibited at The Crafty Fox Market in Brixton and though at first it was a little nervewracking (because I was worried that I wouldn’t make any sales at all!), I ended up having a fabulous time. The DJs were excellent (there was a DJ on every floor!), the atmosphere buzzing, the traders friendly, and the tea and cakes a welcome treat! My boyfriend was roped into helping me set up, my Mum into admin duties, and my friends into packing up, and to tell you the truth: I really couldn’t have done it without them. They were absolute gems.

Alongside having my friends, boyfriend and parents there for moral support, I managed to exceed my sales target and more importantly, I gained some invaluable feedback (and some lovely compliments too) about my products so that I can go forward with a clearer idea of what my clients liked, what they didn’t like, what they want, and ultimately what I need to do to improve my products and services. And unlike other Markets that I’ve done, there didn’t seem to be a clear favourite product wise, as people loved the candles, the skincare products (in particular the rose geranium and jasmine body souffle’), but also my reed diffusers, soap and incense too and that means…well I guess it just means that I am somewhat on the right track as it’s important to me that my products are equally well received.
I myself have fallen in love with some of my products, some of them I swear by (My Pear and Apple Blossom Candle, Solid Lotion Bar and Body Scrub Souffle’ for instance), and I’d like that same belief and enjoyment to be experienced by others.

On Sunday 20th October (which is in 2 weeks time), I will be doing another market! this time in Brick Lane, and I hope to introduce a brand new product there that I have been thinking about making for quite some time now: Hair Elixir. Details to follow shortly!
