“One of a Kind” at Charles Worthington

“One of a Kind” at Charles Worthington

CW-logo-1

I was recently contacted by the marketing manager of the Charles Worthington Hair Salons in London. She had seen my products online and thought that The Secret Scent Societe’ would be a good fit for the intimate client event they were organise at their flagship store in Fitzrovia.

Charles Worthington himself was going to be opening the evening and along with myself they had also invited a personal shopper from Reiss and the celebrity make-up artist Ariane Poole who would be doing a live makeup demonstration on the night.

Charles personally going to be introducing me and I was going to be given an area where I could set up my products to sell. It wasn’t a huge area but ~I figured that as it was such an intimate event for their most loyal customers I wouldn’t need to bring that much stock with me anyway plus I had a beautiful stone mantelpiece that I could use to display my reed diffusers.

They were giving out goody bags to all of the guests so I was asked if I could contribute towards it, so I made up some Coconut & Soy wax travel Candle samples for them to include. She knew about my feature in VOGUE which she was eager for me to highlight so I designed and made some displays featuring my article. I took along with me 4 kinds of Wood Wick Candles, my Massage Candles, 3 of my Luxury Candles, Hair Perfume, Eau de Parfum and Reed Diffusers.

The evening was a very relaxed and well organised affair, with demonstrations by both Ariane, a senior hair stylist showing the newest GHD’s, and a personal shopper from Reiss, with lots of canapés and champagne! It was a fun, interesting and successful evening. People were very complimentary about my products and brand, and I made some sales (2 of which were candles that are going to be used in the lady’s summer wedding!).

I also took the opportunity to promote my new Bespoke Candle Service also, which is a service I’m now offering that includes a completely bespoke scent, and customised options (such as container type and colour choices) for candles.  That seemed to really go down very well as I had a lot of people enquiring about this service.

Afterwards, I was presented with some goody bags of my own which I was chuffed to bits with: One was a bag filled with full sized Charles Worthington products, and the other one was from Reiss: A gorgeous gold and leather wrist band.

Even though I was technically there to work, I found the whole experience very enjoyable and not at all like work. I loved talking to people to hear what they liked or didn’t like. Which were their favourite products and what they would like to see in the future. I found the whole experience really invaluable.  Plus the staff at Charles Worthington seemed to really like the products too.

I got talking to this lovely older lady, who had been going to Charles Worthington for 12 years (she did infact have very lovely hair), and after hearing that one of her favourite hair stylists wanted to get a bespoke candle made for his wedding in September, she generously offered to buy it for him as a wedding gift. Very sweet!

Here are some Pictures from the event:

Candle Massage Therapy

Candle Massage Therapy

Cloud Nine Candle

Aromatherapy Massage Candles (also known as Body Candles) are a relatively new phenomenon and they have been gaining popularity because they can be used in 3 ways:

  1. As a nourishing Body Moisturiser, to soften and smooth the skin
  2. As an Aromatherapy Candle, providing a fresh and beautiful fragrance to your home
  3. As a luxurious quick absorbing Massage Oil to relax the body and ease the mind

Our 3 in 1 Massage Candles are handmade in our London Studio from 100% natural ingredients including a Cotton Wick, a blend of Essential Oils, Vegetable Wax and Oils.

This luxurious product not only imparts a beautiful aroma but it is also packed full of vitamins and minerals such as Coconut Oil and Grapeseed Oil that will keep your skin soft, smooth and supple.

It comes in 2 captivating fragrances:

Serenity: Chamomile & Lavender and Sensuality: Ylang Ylang & Vanilla

How to Use your Massage Candle:

After lighting the wick and waiting for the wax to melt to your desired amount, blow it out and wait for it to cool down before checking the temperature (making sure that the wax isn’t too hot) before pouring the warm wax directly onto your skin.

Our Massage Candle comes in a heavy glass container within a white milskin gift box and is available to buy online on our NOTHS page now:

I am going to be doing a clear out of my fragrance studio at home which means that most of my fragrance oils will have to be discarded as they have now passed their expiry date. It is utterly PAINFUL to see so many good fragrances get thrown away but unfortunately all fragrance oils have a lifeline of approximately 2 years and a lot of them are fast approaching that now. After the fragrance oils sell by date has expired they become harder to work with (in soap and in candles especially), are prone to discolouration and their scent fades. No thanks.

I think once I’ve done a clear out of my fragrance oils (and anything else that’s bin overdue – do you see what I done there? ;), I am going to start keeping a list of all of my Fragrance Oils with details of their approximate expiry dates so I don’t have to guess in future.

I’m also going to print a few Fragrance Wheel’s and pin them up on the walls of my studio to give me inspiration. I don’t usually work with fragrance wheels when designing candle fragrances but it is definitely handy when designing perfume scents which is what I’d like to get into a lot more once I have upgraded my fragrance stock.

I really like this one but I’d also like to find some more complex ones.

A Fancy Fragrance Wheel (sorry, this image is no longer available)

I was approached by a blogger recently, who expressed an interest in featuring some of my products, namely my reed diffusers and scented candles on her blog. She was very complimentary about my products and has reviewed similar luxury home accessory brands on her successful US based luxury travel blog.

I have usually shied away from sending my products to US based bloggers in the past because of the restrictions in sending perfumes and fragrances overseas but sometimes if you can provide specific information on the ingredients used in the products you want to send they allow you to send it so I have sent them the MSDS sheets for the Fragrance Oils I have used in my reed diffusers and candles and am just waiting to hear back from them to see whether it’s going to be a no go or not. It is so annoying to think that my customer base is massively restricted by these postal bans as the US is a massive market that it would be amazing to be able to ship my products over there.

Also, one of my Fragrance Oil suppliers (Sensory Perfection) has discontinued one of my most loved fragrances: Lychee, aswell as Rice Flower Aand Orris FO and I cannot find a supplier of Lychee oil anywhere else in the UK. As one of our popular candles: Monoi de Tahiti & Lychee has a high percentage of Lychee in it and I have plans for it to be featured in many other fragrances, it is imperative that I get my hands on it as soon as possible. Ordering from the US (though a solution), is not ideal as it will take a long time to be shipped to me and also it will cost MUCH more as I will have to pay international shipping charges aswell as customs and duties taxon it  too. For one little bottle of FO it’s hardly going to be worth it.

So, if you know of a reliable UK supplier of Lychee Fragrance Oil then please do post their details below. It is very important that I source an alternative otherwise I fear we’ll all suffer!  sniff sniff

Candle Safety

Candle Safety

Fragrance is my passion, and in my personal opinion there is hardly a better gift to receive or to give then a beautiful scented candle. It’s why I make them and it’s why I have lots of them! 😉

But, just as it’s easy to enjoy the delights and simplicity of a burning candle there are still some very important safety concerns to bare in mind when using them and I have taken the liberty to list some here.

Candle Safety Instructions

  • Always keep a burning candle within your sight. Never leave it unattended and extinguish the candle when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Never burn a candle near anything flammable (bedding, curtains, books, paper, carpet, hair etc)
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets
  • Trim candlewicks a 1/4 inch before burning. Long or uneven wicks can burn out before getting to the wax or cause dripping.

  • Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. It needs to be sturdy, heat resistant, and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.
  • Make sure your candle is placed on a flat, stable, heat resistant surface. This will help to minimise the impact of the glass shattering due to it becoming overheated.
  • Keep the wax pool free of matches, debris or wick trimmings at all times.
  • Always read and follow the candle manufacturers safety instructions carefully, and never burn the candle for longer then the recommended time.

  • Keep burning candles away from drafts, ceiling fans, vents and air currents
  • . This will help to prevent rapid uneven burning, flame flare ups or your candle being blown out.
  • Always burn candles in a well ventilated room and don’t burn too many candles in a small room where air exchange is limited.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the wick holder or container. Discontinue burning the wax when it’s about 2 inches from the bottom.
  • Never touch or move a burning candle when the wax is in liquid form.

Never use a sharp object like a knife to remove wax drippings from the holder as it could scratch the glass causing it to weaken or break.

Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart from each other.

Use a candle snuffer to extinguish your candle – this is the safest way to prevent hot wax splutters.

Never extinguish candles with water.

Extinguish a candle if it splutters, spits, smokes or if the flame becomes too high. The candle isn’t burning properly. Extinguish, cool, check for drafts then relight.

Never use a candle as a night light.

So, if you want to get the best out of your candle experience please follow these safety instructions carefully then you can enjoy an age old tradition in comfort, safety and luxury.

Happy Scenting* 🙂
