For Love and Lemons UPDATE

For Love and Lemons UPDATE

So, my For Love and Lemons Velvet Vixen Maxi Dress arrived from Revolve Clothing the other day. I was most excited to open up the package and try it on as I had to wait almost 2 weeks for it to arrive and was looking forward to accessorising it for the Royal Television Society Dinner that I’m going to the following weekend. Alas…

Well. I’m just not all that keen on it.

I’d love to tell you how beautiful and amazing, unique, luxurious and glamorous it looked, but unfortunately I cannot. Because when I first opened up the package my first thought was that it was a lovely colour (as it is), but I was worried not only about the very visible front slit seam (which wasn’t there in the pictures on the website!), but also about the slightly baggy fit around the waist area. Of course my concern about the fit wasn’t a definitive opinion at this stage because I hadn’t tried the dress on yet, but I know my body and know how things will fit on me and it looked a little baggy to me. When I got home and tried it on my concerns were verified as the area around the waist was loose. The dress does have a tie string at the back but even when I done that up the dress still looked quite shapeless to me. Also the material covering the breasts doesn’t allow for any cleavage. It just sort of sits over the boob area, in a pretty uninspiring and sexless way. Reluctantly I have to admit that overall the dress looks pretty casual. It’s not high glamour like I thought and hoped it would be. And that’s very disappointing.

I actually have another dress in a similar style (a long red maxi dress with a front slit), which I was going to wear as a back up should this one not arrive in time and it fits much better AND it’s cheaper too. I paid almost £200 for this dress!

My plan is to try it on again tonight, perhaps with the fur stole that I bought to wear with it, or with high heels and makeup and ask my boyfriends honest opinion on it, but I think that it’s pretty safe to say that I’m going to be sending it back to California and asking for a refund as it’s really not what I thought it would be, and unlike some other peoples ways of styling the dress that I’ve seen (leather jackets and biker boots), it’s just not cut out for the job at hand. I have no intention of walking around in a velvet maxi dress with biker boots, I bought it to wear as an elegant evening dress but if it’s not that then it’s gotta go.

Vixen dress<< You see, NO SEAM across the front slits.

In this picture you can clearly see that her arms are artistically placed so that you cannot see the true shape of the dress. Hmpf. Very disappointing indeed.

I know I’ve told you this before but I just felt inspired to remind you 🙂

It has occurred to me over these past few years of my internet shopping career (well it’s not a career exactly but it’s certainly a favourite pastime), that I am a lover of design that is created underneath the sun. And by that I mean, I love #fashion that is designed in hot country’s, preferably ones with a beach inspired lifestyle. It’s far from intentional, but infact refreshingly coincidental.

It all started with Wheels and Dollbaby, who had a small commission store at one time in the now defunct Allders. I liked their branding and so I bought a top from them. It also came with a removable badge, which I quite liked. Soon after that I had a look on there website, where I was amazed and quite frankly horrified to find that not only were they based in Sydney #Australia, all the way on the other side of the world, but that the prices of their clothing was extortionate, certainly not very reasonable at all. Alas, I was determined to have a particular dress that I had my eye on so I sent an email to my work colleagues asking them for a donation to my #birthday dress fund (I kid you not). In addition to this I also sent round a picture of the said Wheels and Dollbaby dress in an internal mail envelope asking for contributions so that I could acquire this beauteous frock. It worked! Whether through my sheer audacity, compassion or because they really liked the dress it paid off. The dress was over a hundred pounds and included a pretty horrible shipping fee too. Alas I love the dress and still wear it to this day.

Then there was #Stylestalker (Australia). I fell in love with a beautiful floaty white dress with a dipped back and shiny gold shoulder studs and bought it immediately. It was almost £150 but as Stylestalker was stocked by my beloved #Asos I was able to bypass the extortionate shipping fees which was alright by me. Even though I’ve owned it for a few years now it remains my favourite dress and is perfect for warm balmy nights. It is far too nice to wear in this cold country but was made for #holidays. They have a number of drool worthy clothes in there collection to warrant inclusion on my favourite #brands list.

Asos also stocked another Australian brand called #Nookie Beach. Not only was there brand name impressive, but there #swimwear was too. I bought a lovely khaki coloured cover up from them and drooled over the rest of their swimwear range. I really liked there stuff but could not justify their prices. They were far from reasonable and almost unaffordable.

I soon found a brand called #Celeb Boutique (UK), who designed sexy evening dresses just a tad over the reasonably bold and daring mark. There dresses were not only designed well, but they fit very well and came in a lovely array of colours too. They are very expensive however so I usually only buy myself a dress from Celeb Boutique on special occasions. Thankfully my darling boyfriend has surprised me with a Celeb Boutique dress at #Christmas 3 years in a row. I do love him!

Asos introduced me to another UK (and Delhi) based clothing brand called Needle & Thread ( I know I’ve mentioned them before). They have an absolutely beautiful array of hand embroidered dresses. I can see the craftsmanship in everything they design and despite me not owning one of their designs (because of the hefty pricetag that though warranted is not affordable for me at all!), I still admire them.

And then I found Nasty Gal (California). Nasty Gal introduced me not only to there very unique and very beach/boho inspired designs but to similar brands that I loved.

They included:

Minimale Animale (based in #California). They do the sexiest swimwear you’ve ever seen!

Bless’ed are the Meek (Australia). Gorgeous dresses amongst other things.

Lisa Maree (Australia) Some really lovely hand crochet dresses

Vitamin A (California). Sexy swimwear California style!

And a personal favourite of mine: For Love and Lemons, who are based in California but there 2 designers admit that they are inspired by Australian designers. There clothes are designed using delicate fabrics and intricate patterns, and they are sexy, unique and fresh. I don’t own anything from them (yet), but when I’ve saved up I will! lol

And last, but by no means least, is #Berta Bridal (Israel) who have a breathtakingly beautiful array of wedding dresses. I didn’t know you were getting married? you might ask. I’m not! I just have a deep love and appreciation for these dress designs and I have said very openly to my boyfriend that if we were ever to get married I would be wearing a dress designed by Berta. End of. I’ve decided, and there really is nothing else I need to contemplate because she is the one for me!

So you see most of the brands I like are either based on the Californian beaches or the Australian beaches! I’m a child of the sun. Born in the month of July. My starsign is Leo. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why I love the casual boho/beach sexy of these brands.

Look, see!

The heat of the Sun, the beat of the drum, Croatia here I come!

The Suncebeat festival in Croatia “is only a daay-awaay!”

I’m packed and ready to get my party on! 8 days of beach parties & boat parties with the best house dj’s around the world, and endless sunshine!

Some more good news: I have found another website to rival Nasty Gal! It’s called Revolve and it’s based in California. Yes I know: Another Californian based fashion company. I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or what. They are a much bigger company than Nasty Gal and have been in business for longer and though their clothing is similar and they too are based in California that’s where the similarities end I think. Revolve is like the bigger (and perhaps a tad more refined) sister to Nasty Gal. Where I’ve had numerous problems with the duties and customs charges and general lack of adequate communication and information from their customer services team Revolve appear to have all of this under control.

Firstly, they have a couple of international shipping options including one where you can pay your customs and duties taxes upfront instead of on delivery, saving you time and anxiety (particularly when you are expected to have the exact change!). In addition, if you see something you like and it’s not in your size you can not only request it, but you can also pay for it upfront and request to be notified if it comes back in stock within the next month or ever. This is a very useful service indeed. How many times have you seen something you desperately wanted but it was out of stock and you never knew if it would become available again? – it happens to be the best of us. Indeed it’s happened to me quite a number of times and I have wished that there was such a system as this.
It’s a great perk for their customers and of course, it’s a benefit to them too. It means that their customers stay loyal.

But these are technicalities..the real reason why I like this company is because of their clothes. Well dresses mainly (as you know I am obsessed with dresses). The selection of dresses they have on their site is immense. Not only in size but in quality. There dresses are beautiful! Unlike Nasty Gal they don’t have their own brand, they don’t design the clothes but they have an eye for finding unusual and beautiful dresses with small independent designers around the world (indeed quite a number of my favourite Australian brands are on there), and they are amazing.
I haven’t gone as far as to look at their other clothing (though I’m sure they are of a very high standard also) but I did see their swimming costumes and dresses and that was enough for me to know that they are my kind of people!

Are they cheap? No. Are they reasonably priced? Erm, no, not necessarily. Are they worth the price? I would say so, Yes. It’s not the kind of place where you frequently make purchases but it’s the kind of place where if you’re looking for a standout frock you can find it. If you’re looking for a summer dress you will locate it here. If you’re looking for an occasion dress, an evening dress, a casual dress, you can find it here.
