New Product Photography

New Product Photography

A few weeks ago I had a photoshoot in Kilburn for my existing and up and coming products.

It was waaay overdue and I’m really glad that I done it though I had only booked a 2 hour slot and I didn’t realise until we were shooting how quickly that time goes!

I do think that it makes sense to do product photoshoots regularly (like every 6 months or so) and time it so that you’re able to incorporate any new products into your shoot also.

I will be releasing 3 new products just in time for Christmas! (Wood Wick Candles, Hair Perfume and Eau De Parfum)

Here are the fruits of my labour (or his, depending on which way you want to look at it!):

1.Reed Diffuser Transparent2.Lavender, With Love Candle

3.Body Scrub Souffle' Lemongrass & Mandarin4.First Love Perfume

  1. Anniversary Reed Diffuser
  2. Lavender, With Love Luxury Soy Candle
  3. Lemongrass & Mandarin Himalayan Pink Salt Body Scrub Souffle’
  4. First Love Eau De Parfum

Would love to know your thoughts on the new photography and products!

As always, The Secret Scent Societe’ Bath, Bodycare and Fragrant Homewares are available to buy on NOTHS: http://www.notonthehighstreet.com/thesecretscentsociete

This week has been really busy here in The Secret Scent Societe’ lab!

I made contact with Love Lula on Monday, who are an award winning UK online boutique who exclusively sell natural and organic beauty and skincare brands. They have the biggest selection of natural and organic products online in the UK not to mention some truly amazing, innovative brands. I introduced myself and The Secret Scent Societe’ to them and they said they were interested and asked me to send them some samples of my products so I’m just waiting to hear back from them now. Fingers crossed they like them!

My cousin, who is a jewellery designer, contacted me about doing a collaborative presentation of both of our products at 2 offices she is booked to go and see in a couple of weeks to sell her products. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the time off work to attend with her but she’s offered to not only take my products with her and display them alongside her own but also to sell them for me (and she doesn’t even want a cut!). She’s being so generous with her time and efforts! The only problem is that I’m out of stock on most things! So I’ve had to make a rush order so that I can have a few products to give to her by next weekend (aaah!).

Photography

As you know I’ve had a number of issues when trying to take photographs of my products and despite buying professional equipment, watching videos online and reading books on the topic I’m still unsatisfied with my product photography. I was previously against the idea of paying a professional to take the photographs because I didn’t feel it was worth it when I could do it  myself (not!), but after talking to my cousin she encouraged me to do so. She has amazing photography and said that she pays a photographer to take pictures of her jewellery every 6 months, so she gets him to take pictures of any new products then. Realising that I was holding myself back from doing many things like approaching online retailers, magazines and blogs about promoting or selling my products because of my lack of suitable photography, I’ve finally made a decision to get a professional in! It’s right when they say that you should delegate the jobs you’re no good at and concentrate on the jobs you are good!  I contacted a photographer on Gumtree and he said he could do it no problem. I didn’t want to spend the money initially but not spending the money wasn’t progressing my business so I’ve just decided to stop procrastinating. And now I feel much better now that I’ve made that decision. It really takes a weight off my shoulders and I know that it will be money well spent in the longrun.

Kilner Jars

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my brand image because besides the fact that people always tell me how great it is there are a few products that won’t shift online no matter what and I think I’ve finally worked out what it is (aside from the price that is!). When I sell products in person people seem to really love them but online I think that perhaps their vibrant colours can be a little off-putting/bright. I’m referring to 3AM (Gold) and Black Frost (Purple). The irony is that these candles both have the most unusual, complex and alluring scents of all the candles I make which people seem to really take to when they smell them in person but of course selling scents online is another matter entirely! So I have decided to trial some other candle colours by a candle colour specialist company called Bekro. They have some really pretty neutral colours which I like: beige, grey, dusky pinks, lilac, cream etc and I not only personally prefer these kinds of colours but I think these colours are more suited to my brand and I think that more people will like them. Of course, I still make white candles but they can be very boring – it’s good to give people some alternative options. I have also decided to change the packaging of the body scrub souffle’ kilner jars (which are currently the same colour as the body soufflé’s: smoke grey). I’m going instead for this Rose Pink Pantone colour:

Pantone 691 U

The company I buy my candle holders and cosmetics containers from are able to do customised colours so long as it’s a Pantone colour so let’s see what they come up with!

Wood Wick Candles

Remember awhile ago I told you about my intention to make wood wick candles? – well they are finally on there way! I hope to have them ready for my cousin to take to her events in a couple of weeks but I still need to think about fragrances as I’m not sure yet whether I’m going to do the wood wicks with fragrance oils or essential oils (which will be much more expensive). I’m going to wait until the ingredients arrive and decide then I think. I believe that they will sell really well because I don’t know anyone else who are doing these types of candles and they have such a satisfying sound and smoky aroma. Just Gawjus!

We’ve come to a bit of a lull here in The Secret Scent Societe’ lab but rather then sit about stewing over the whats the whys and the wheres I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and try getting my products into some magazines. I don’t know what stopped me from doing this before, fear perhaps, but I’ve decided that fear isn’t going to get my brand where I want it to be. I realise now that without setting any realistic tasks and goals I would continue to feel de-motivated and ask myself what the point was. Understanding that this is normal, and that I’m far from being the only one is the first step to deciding how to remedy the problem. So I took some advice that my cousin gave me last week about contacting the magazines and websites that I want my products to be featured in and have contacted the editor of my favourite magazine of all Stylist. There page The Style List always has an eyecatching variety of products both from well known brands and small independent ones. It’s infact the one place where I know that my products would do well to be seen in, as in actually result in sales, which unfortunately not what happened after my ad in VOGUE (sad but true). In reality all marketing and promotion is a gamble, and sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. But I do believe that being seen in Stylist is a positive and progressive step towards being where I want to be: An established brand that people can’t help but to be loyal to. I appreciate that they must get tons of people contacting them about being in there magazine so I have sent an email offering a free sample of my products. I mean, who doesn’t want a freebie?
I think that since I’m on a roll there’s no point in stopping there.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to contact a few other publications about being featured. Aferall they can only say no huh?

Has fear ever held you back from doing things you want to do? And if so, what did you do about it in the end?

We’re about to strike a pose…in VOGUE!

We’re about to strike a pose…in VOGUE!

Yes, Yes it’s almost upon us! The most exciting moment in my short but very fulfilling business life:

We are about to be featured in British VOGUE!

Our handmade Rose-Geranium & Jasmine Body Souffle’ will be in the May issue in an article named “Beauty’s Best Kept Secrets” alongside other fabulous beauty brands.
I don’t dare to dream of what this might mean for my brand, as it’s quite overwhelming to consider the possibilities but I am hopeful that this will be a stepping stone for me into exploring other avenues for The Secret Scent Societe’.

And of course this exposure can only help my cause. I’ve decided to cut down on the markets that I’ve been doing as they were never very lucrative for me. Successful market stalling requires a combination of being in the right locations for my target market, patience and a healthy dose of good luck. In addition, doing market stalls is very time consuming and energy zapping, and unless you have a market stall companion to talk to it can be very boring too! No, selling online is the way forward!

I’m very much looking forward to adopting the phrase: “As seen in VOGUE” – I realise it’s a little braggy, but that name holds weight. And I need weight to approach the kinds of people that I want to approach.

So please show your support by picking up your copy of the May edition of VOGUE, which is out on Monday 7th April, or better yet try out our Body Souffle’ for yourself – I promise that you, your Best Friend, your Mother, Your lover (well perhaps not your lover;) will love it! 🙂

Just 2 weeks to go!

Just 2 weeks to go!

British-Vogue-Logo

Yes, tis a mere 2 weeks to go before my debut in British VOGUE Magazine and gosh am I excited!
My plan to replace all of the pictures on my NotOnTheHighstreet page is in process (a work in progress!) in preparation for lots of views (and hopefully, sales!)
It’s far from perfect but I think that finally I’m getting the hang of this photography thing, which is a relief I can tell you.

I have pre warned a few friends that I may be requiring there assistance should things get a little crazy following the VOGUE release and I’m giving away my very first batch of cold process soap to some specially selected friends and family with a prompt for them to review it and give me there honest opinion. I think this will be really helpful in order to improve on my next batch of soap, listening to there very honest advice and taking into account all of the things that they think constitutes a good bar of soap! I intend on doing many more soap tests to get the perfect bar before I release any for general sale.

I’m continuing to market my products on Etsy, though I’m not getting many bites. To be honest the only reason why I bother staying on there at all is for my presence on the internet, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. Despite my products being cheaper on there then on notonthehighstreet sales are still excruciatingly slow, almost non existent.

The feature in VOGUE is out on Monday 7th April so do pick one up! It’s called “Best Kept Beauty Secrets”

Also, if you haven’t already done so, do follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook and I will follow you/like you back! Links below.

Happy Wednesday! 🙂

Hi All!

I hope that whatever you did this weekend, it was a memorable one.
I had a nice relaxing weekend at home with my boyfriend. We watched loads of episodes of Breaking Bad (love it!) and my sister stayed over on Friday night and brought her freshly baked banana and walnut loaf with her. Mmmmm!

I spent at least 4 hours on Sunday morning working on product photography but in the end I wasn’t happy with any of the images as they all had a blue tint to them (probably something to do with the camera settings), alas I will have to do them all again – what fun! (not).

I am in 4 Treasurys this week! The first one is entitled “I’m not always a pink kind of girl” – which I can vouch for as I’m not a particularly pinky girl either, however I do like blood red, ox red, burgundy (all very similar I know, hehe) and blush pink and they all feature in this lovely treasury. My blush pink candle “Anniversary” is featured here.

G’day Folks!

I hope you’re doing swell! My weekend of extended birthday celebrations started off with a bang. My boyfriend has just bought himself a new car and is treating it like it was his first born child but at least the weather was nice enough to drive around with the top down. Had dinner at Beach Blanket Babylon where my Mum almost got lost trying to find the ladies toilets, lol, then we went onto The Supperclub to shake a leg. Twas a great night.

We have been featured in some Treasurys again this week.

This Treasury is entitled “White Cloud” and is a collection of fluffy, dreamy, heavenly things and includes my very beautiful candle “Cloud Nine” which has musky base notes, with a heart of French Vanilla and Rice Flower. It smells absolutely gorgeous!

Craft Markets R US!

Craft Markets R US!

upmarket logo

I’m off to Ibiza in 20 days time and I can’t wait! Beautiful weather, beautiful people, sun, sand and great house music, what more could you ask for??

Following our announcement about us trading at Crafty Fox in October I was contacted by the manager of the Brick Lane markets in East London about trading with them so I went down on Sunday to check them out. The markets were absolutely heaving with people and I could immediately see why there “Up Market” has been voted by Time Out as being the “Best Market for New Designers”. Brick Lane Markets boasts the largest, most creative, eclectic and unique finds in London. People that frequent Brick Lane spend there entire day browsing the amazing stalls, listening to the live bands that play there, hanging out with friends, and tasting some of the delicious looking international cuisines on offer. Almost anything you could possibly want you can find there, it’s like a trove of treasures.

brick lane market

Homegrown is a market that specifically caters to those looking for handcrafted goods, championing independent UK designers and makers and helping to gain exposure for small local creative businesses. It’s a relatively new concept for Brick Lane as there Up Market and Backyard Markets offer mainly sourced Vintage wares, clothes and jewellery and because it’s new it isn’t as established or as popular as the others but I think this is likely to change (and soon) as more and more people look for products that have been handmade, and preferably with an environmental and eco friendly conscience.

Though it was clear that Upmarket was the more popular market I’ve decided to trade at Homegrown as my products are all handmade and I think it’s important to promote that fact, plus I preferred the space as it felt quite light and airy in comparison to the other markets. Also it has a pretty reasonable trading rate. Trading at Up Market on the other hand, costs £100 a day (ouch), so better left until I’m absolutely sure I’ll be able to cover that fee methinks!

I’m thinking about trading in the month of September but we’ll have to see how it goes when I return from my hols at the beginning of the month as there are lots of products I want to make before then to make sure that my stall is as varied as possible.

I’ve been searching for some inspiration so that I can create an elegant yet visually arresting stall display for my products so if you have any great ideas then please feel free to share them with me here. I would love to hear your thoughts!

Have a grrreat day! 🙂

The finest body scrub ever?…

The finest body scrub ever?…

Well, possibly!

I was recently contacted by a Beauty and Lifestyle blogger who regularly writes reviews on large and small independent companies beauty products. She’s based in the UK, and has a very easy to understand, unbiased yet thorough writing style that I liked so I was very happy to send her 2 of my products to review. I sent her: Himalayan Pink Salt Body Scrub Souffle’ and Frankincense & Myrr (Frankincense & Myrrh) Soy Pillar Candle. She claims that my body scrub is possibly the finest scrub she’s ever used! Needless to say I am very flattered 🙂
