Oriental Perfume Making Workshop

Oriental Perfume Making Workshop

Last weekend was our Spring Perfume Making Workshop where I taught a workshop on Spring inspired Perfumes in a beautiful space above a jewellery shop in Hatton Garden.

We drunk prosecco, made some beautiful perfumes and generally made merry – it was a really relaxing, beautiful day and my guests said that they had really enjoyed the experience (infact one of them had even travelled all the way from Munich to attend!). Flattering indeed.

And for me, well to be honest it didn’t really feel like work at all. I really enjoy teaching and though I don’t know everything I enjoy the process of teaching, learning and being taught. Indeed, these ladies had some things to teach me as one was an aromatherapist, and the other a natural skincare maker. It IS nice being in the presence of likeminded fellows. Since our theme was spring we concentrated on making scents that were floral, green/aromatic and/or citrus and I really think we achieved this. The ladies were certainly very happy with their creations.

So since this Perfume Gift Experience seems to be going so well (and since I’m a little bit obsessed with it), I think I will continue!

I have just organised my next workshop which this time will be on Oriental Fragrances.

Oriental Fragrances, along with Florals, are one of the most popular types of fragrance and so I thought it would be a great idea to do a workshop using some of the sexiest aromatic materials around. Think dusky woods, musks, sensual florals and spices.

I love Clerkenwell so I decided to host the workshop in Clerkenwell again, close to Hatton Garden, Sadler’s Wells and Exmouth Market.

If prosecco, cake and perfume making sounds like a good idea to you then why don’t you come along?

Tickets are available on Eventbrite

A lesson in love

“Make me a Fragrance that Smells like Love”

Christian Dior

This Saturday 11th February I am going to be hosting a Valentine’s inspired Perfume Making Workshop and it’s wonderfully exciting!

When I first started learning about Perfumery some years ago, it was partly the love for the complexity and beauty of the oils that seduced me but also the mystery of this elusive and magical art. The thought of being a perfumer to me was very romantic. And somehow forbidden, because back in the days a Perfumer was to be also an alchemist, an aromatherapist, and a sacred person.

Perfumery has always been a very secretive profession and there are only a smattering of Perfumery Schools these days who even teach it. I was lucky in that I was interested in learning mainly about natural perfumes (most of the perfumes you buy these days are made with chemicals) so I was able to find a local course teaching perfumery by a very eccentric Chinese perfumer and botanist who seemed reasonably delighted with my amateur creations.  I was hooked.

What I always wanted to do however was make bespoke perfumes for people. It’s why I started making candles, to assuage my need for creating fragrances, and why I started The Secret Scent Société and why I finally, after finding the right space to do it in, have started offering Bespoke Perfume Making Classes in London. In this respect I think I’ve finally found my calling.

The first event is in London with the theme of Valentines Day which means different things for different people, but for me it definitely means flowers! So we will be making perfumes with a variety of different essential oils (as it’s a natural perfume making workshop), and people will be smelling, selecting, building, and blending their very own creations on the day.

I’m really excited about offering this experience to people and I look forward to doing many more in the future!

If you would like to know more, are thinking of coming along or know someone who might like being a perfumer for the day then forward this onto them!

The best fragrance’s for each room in your home

The best fragrance’s for each room in your home

Nowadays when we walk into a fancy department store like The White Company, Abercrombie & Fitch or Hollister to name just a few we immediately get hit with a waft of perfume. And this is no coincidence. Big brands have started employing Scent Marketers as they have realised that in order to make more sales they need to engage people’s most emotional senses: Their sense of smell.

75% of our emotions is linked to smell which is directly linked to pleasure, happiness and general well-being so having a brand fragrance has shown to dramatically increase sales because it enhances their sense of connection with the brand and their values – no wonder they are making it their business to get into the scent business.

When we are at home, this feeling of contentment and well-being is all the more important because we want our homes to smell good, be inviting and personal to us all at the same time.

Here are some suggestions on fragrances to introduce into your home environment to stimulate the senses and connect your environment with the way you’d like it to feel.

Living Room

This is typically the room we relax in, so it’s the room we’d like to be calm and comfortable in. Woody/Spicy fragrances like Sandalwood and Frankincense are good in this environment.

Our Candle F & M has woody hints of Sandalwood and refreshing Citrus along with spicy, anchoring notes of Frankincense & Myrrh. The perfect scent for an environment of relaxation.

Kitchen

We spent a lot of time in the kitchen, and now that more and more people are getting open planned kitchen/dining spaces so that they can entertain their friends it’s even more important that you get the smell of your kitchen right because nobody wants a kitchen that smells bad. The best scents to create a feeling of freshness and mask any unpleasant food odours are citrus or herbal fragrances like Lavender or Bergamot.

Our Candle fragrance Lavender, With Love has the best of both worlds, a fresh, slightly fruity floral note and a refreshing herbaceous scent of Lavender.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are where we get clean so we want them to smell clean. This is best achieved by having a brightening Citrus fragrance, such as Lemon or Grapefruit.

Our Citrus Aromatherapy Candle Grapefruit & Lime looks great in the bathroom and will fill the air with a fresh and uplifting Citrus notes.

Bedroom

Your bedroom is your sanctuary. It is your most personal space and therefore is the area in which your personality should really shine. It is also the most sensual space in the home so natural aphrodisiac scents like Rose and Jasmine should feature boldly. Or if you really want to seduce someone then a oriental fragrance will do that nicely.

Our Aromatherapy Candle Rose-Geranium & Jasmine is a great place to start but if you prefer a fragrance with more dark, sexy, mysterious notes then our luxurious Candle fragrance Indian Mistress of the Night, with spicy notes of Ginger and floral notes of Tuberose really set the mood.

Or, if you’re looking for a more Bespoke Fragrance to compliment your rooms and yourself, then why don’t you try our Bespoke Candle Service where you can get a signature scent created especially for yourself or give it as a extra special gift.

So, get yourself and your home smelling the way you want!

Candle Safety

Candle Safety

Fragrance is my passion, and in my personal opinion there is hardly a better gift to receive or to give then a beautiful scented candle. It’s why I make them and it’s why I have lots of them! 😉

But, just as it’s easy to enjoy the delights and simplicity of a burning candle there are still some very important safety concerns to bare in mind when using them and I have taken the liberty to list some here.

Candle Safety Instructions

  • Always keep a burning candle within your sight. Never leave it unattended and extinguish the candle when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Never burn a candle near anything flammable (bedding, curtains, books, paper, carpet, hair etc)
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets
  • Trim candlewicks a 1/4 inch before burning. Long or uneven wicks can burn out before getting to the wax or cause dripping.

  • Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. It needs to be sturdy, heat resistant, and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.
  • Make sure your candle is placed on a flat, stable, heat resistant surface. This will help to minimise the impact of the glass shattering due to it becoming overheated.
  • Keep the wax pool free of matches, debris or wick trimmings at all times.
  • Always read and follow the candle manufacturers safety instructions carefully, and never burn the candle for longer then the recommended time.

  • Keep burning candles away from drafts, ceiling fans, vents and air currents
  • . This will help to prevent rapid uneven burning, flame flare ups or your candle being blown out.
  • Always burn candles in a well ventilated room and don’t burn too many candles in a small room where air exchange is limited.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the wick holder or container. Discontinue burning the wax when it’s about 2 inches from the bottom.
  • Never touch or move a burning candle when the wax is in liquid form.

Never use a sharp object like a knife to remove wax drippings from the holder as it could scratch the glass causing it to weaken or break.

Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart from each other.

Use a candle snuffer to extinguish your candle – this is the safest way to prevent hot wax splutters.

Never extinguish candles with water.

Extinguish a candle if it splutters, spits, smokes or if the flame becomes too high. The candle isn’t burning properly. Extinguish, cool, check for drafts then relight.

Never use a candle as a night light.

So, if you want to get the best out of your candle experience please follow these safety instructions carefully then you can enjoy an age old tradition in comfort, safety and luxury.

Happy Scenting* 🙂
